Abstract

In addition to offensive combat operations, the Indian Air Force (IAF) also engages in various non-combat activities such as the evacuation of civilians, peacekeeping operations, participation in international drills, aerobatic demonstrations, showcasing air assets, and international relief efforts, particularly overseas Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

Whenever humanity suffers due to crises, conflicts, or natural calamities, the IAF steps in to alleviate agony and trauma. Its solemn objective of not only safeguarding national interests but also disseminating the message of "one earth, one family" throughout the world is evident in numerous instances. These include rescuing Indian citizens during the turmoil in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of NATO forces and evacuating people of Indian origin from Eastern European nations amidst the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The IAF has honed its skills and mastered the art of coordinating efforts with other nations to project combined HADR capabilities. For instance, the IAF provided assistance to as many as 98 countries by transporting COVID-19 vaccines, earning tremendous goodwill for India. The IAF’s crucial role in mitigating transcontinental contingencies is recognized globally. Its willingness to extend help not only to neighboring countries but also to nations farther away, without bias, reflects India's ethos and the spirit of its motto, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family).

The Indian Air Force tackles disaster relief operations effectively with advanced planning and preparation. It conducts reconnaissance of routes where possible, establishes efficient communication systems, and ensures effective control and coordination of diverse forces. Its leadership and dedication ensure the success of these operations. The IAF has rendered invaluable service to the world through its disaster relief efforts, and its air warriors take immense pride in these missions, always ready to spring into action whenever humanity needs them.
